Tanisha Sonkar was her mother's first child. After her birth, Tanisha's mother was afflicted with postpartum depression which adversely affected her flow of milk. To make matters worse, Tanisha's mother also had a breast structure problem which further reduced the amount of milk available for feeding. With the supply of breastmilk so inadequate, Tanisha herself rejected breastfeeding altogether.
Anni Singh grew up in a suburban slum outside of Kolkata. The family was too poor to be able
to keep her in school, and at the age of 19 she was married to a garment worker in Fakir Bagan.
After three months of marriage, Anni became pregnant, but her first pregnancy ended in
miscarriage. Anni then found herself coughing incessantly and was diagnosed with Tuberculosis.
She began tuberculosis treatment through the World Health Organization's DOTS program Directly
Observed Treatment. Soon after the treatment began, however, Anni discovered that she was again
pregnant. Because Anni had been treated by Calcutta Kids during her first pregnancy, she again
came to us.
With her multiple conditions, Anni received an array of Calcutta Kids services designed for expectant mothers. Anni's pregnancy seemed to be progressing well, until a sonogram revealed that her baby had breech presentation (positioning of the baby was abnormal and dangerous), putting Anni in the high risk category for a normal birth canal delivery. This was an emergency. It was clear that Anni would need a cesearian section to save both the mother and child. The C-section was carried out successfully, and Anni's baby boy was born weighing 6 pounds 10 ounces and without any birth complications. Meanwhile Anni's tuberculosis is now in remission.
