Anni Singh grew up in a suburban slum outside of Kolkata. The family was too poor to be able
to keep her in school, and at the age of 19 she was married to a garment worker in
Fakir Bagan. After three months of marriage, Anni became pregnant, but her first pregnancy
ended in miscarriage. Anni then found herself coughing incessantly and was diagnosed with
Tuberculosis.

In 2008, more than 1.8 million children under the age of 5 died in India - these deaths
are largely from preventable and curable illnesses. Low birthweight is the single best
predictor of whether a child will live past his/her fifth birthday, and tragically 40%
of Indian babies are born with low birthweights of less than 5.5 pounds (2.5 kilograms).
If it is not complications from a low birthweight that kills these children, it may be
malnutrition, or a lack of access to proper medical care.
Undernutrition's most damaging effects occur in utero and during the first two years of life,
and recognizing that the effects of this early damage on health, brain development,
intelligence, educability, and productivity are largely irreversible. So the best way to
ensure that a child will survive and live a productive and healthy life is to make sure that
the child's mother is cared for and healthy during her pregnancy; that the child is born with
a birthweight of above 5.5 pounds; and that the child is kept healthy up to the age of 2.
